turbulence on campus, and served until 1999, overseeing student organizations and
in 1992 publishing the university's first handbook on race relations.
Epps, who first arrived on campus as a divinity student in 1958, was also a scholar
of Islam and edited the book "The Speeches of Malcolm X at Harvard." Epps, a Louisiana
native, received a bachelor of theology degree from Harvard Divinity School and a
certificate in educational management from Harvard's business and education schools.
He became a teaching assistant in 1961 and assistant dean of Harvard College in 1964,
and was involved in mediating disputes between administrators and students during
an era of protest.
